Off-site electric drive shredding
Whether or not you have a power supply restriction at your site, when you install new equipment it pays to be very mindful of the electrical control technology employed.
Superior Electrical Control Technology such as AXO's Dual Closed Loop Soft Starter System and AXO SmoothShred Software reduce current spikes. Inferior technology such as Star Delta Start, Direct On-line Start and inferior Soft Starter systems do a poor job of restricting current spikes, which can have unexpected costs:
Because of the high power usage of the inferior technology machine, it may restrict the ability to install additional equipment in future.
Electricity supply companies generally charge more to users who draw more current, or who cause more current spikes. Inferior technology shredding machines generally draw more current and cause more current spikes.
For a given power supply there may be a choice between a cheaper but lower powered, lower throughput and inferior technology machine, or a greater investment in a higher powered, higher throughput and more advanced technology machine. The initial cost of the inferior technology machine may be lower, but its lower throughput increases wages, costing more each day to operate.
The resale value of a superior technology machine will be greater as there will be more sites where the equipment can be installed, so more potential bidders for the machinery.
Free plant efficiency report
If will come as no surprise that some electric drive off-site shredding plants are more efficient than others. At AXO we have plenty of experience with both ends of the efficiency spectrum. What seems to be harder is for the operator or owner of a shredding plant to evaluate how efficient their plant is when compared to others. They rarely get the opportunity to make this comparison.
A useful benchmark figure that indicates efficiency is the kilograms processed per operator hour. Some shredding plants process only 100 kilograms per operator hour, which means making a profit is virtually impossible. In fact the more work they handle, the greater the loss. Others, with better equipment, can process well over 2,000 kilograms per operator hour - that's a 20 fold difference!
